UPDATE:We have contacted Comcast and have been removed from the blacklist. We now have an open dialogue and contact with a Comcast representative and will hopefull be able to avoid this problem in the future. If your mail is blacklisted again, please email us at support@martnet.com and we will now be able to more quickly respond and deal with any problems that may arise with Comcast.

Currently, customers with websites and email addresses hosted on our primary webserver, www1.martnet.com, are unable to send email to any Comcast.net addresses, as we have been placed on a Comcast "blacklist".

This problem is ongoing and has been happening for several weeks now. We have tried on numerous occasions to contact Comcast via email, phone, and their many online forms. The only responses we have gotten are vague automated email messages that say "most of the email" received from our mail servers is spam. This is blatantly false and they have ignored our repeated requests to be removed from their blacklist and have ignored our requests for their help by giving us examples of these "spam" emails that are coming from our servers. Our phone calls go directly to a voice mail drop box where they say that "due to the high volume of calls", their normal 24 hours response time may be longer. This problem is not isolated to just MartNet. A google search for "comcast blacklist" turns up hundreds of links about many other major ISP's being blocked.

A few years back we had a similar problem with AOL. We were able to contact their abuse department by phone and speak to a live technician within minutes. We set up a relationship with them where they would send us a copy of every email that came from our servers that was marked as spam and since this system was set up, we have not been blocked by AOL again. We can only hope comcast will change their policies to work with other providers like AOL has.

We have no ETA of when this problem with comcast be resolved. We will keep trying to contact them in any way possible and we anxiously await their response. Keep reading this site for more updates.

UPDATE - JULY 5, 10PM EDT
Our network provider has swapped out a faulty network card in a core router. We are closely monitoring the network and connectivity to all major backbones. At this time, the issue appears to be fixed. We will continue to monitor our network and our providers' networks.

We are currently experiencing latency issues (slowdowns) with the network(s) going to our core servers. We have verified the problem is NOT with any MartNet servers or equipment, but within the peering facility in Philadelphia where the MartNet core servers provide.. We are working with our network providers to resolv the issue. This only effects some users and we are working with our bandwidth providers to isolate and solve the issue. All servers are up. If you experience delays or errors using MartNet services, please retry. Updates will be posted to this site.

On SATURDAY, JULY 9th at 9PM EDT will be doing
a major software upgrade on our primary web server, www1.martnet.com.
We have a maintence window of about 1 hour but we are only
expecting about 15 minutes of actual server downtime. We are doing this
upgrade to install some fantastic new software and to get rid of some
old, obsolete software to make our server an ever smoother running
system.

****** WE WILL BE UPGRADING OUR SPAMASSASSIN SPAM FILTERING SYSTEM. If you use Bayes Filtering you will need to re-train your filter, as the new version is not comatible with the old version. If you use the auto-learn function this will happen automatically, but some spam may now be filtered as the system is retrained. *******

*** During actaul server downtime, all mail will be qeued in
our mail server so no mail will be lost

*** Dial up connections will remain the same. If you are
dialed in during the upgrade, or dial up during the downtime,
you connectiong to the internet will be unaffected.

*** All of your files will remain intact and the same as they
were before. As usual, we have extensive back up procedures
and we will backing up all files before we do any upgrade.
We have been doing extensive testing of all the major technologically heavy sites at MartNet to make sure that this upgrade goes as smoothly as possible, with minimal service inturruption.

We recently received this notice from our dial up provider:

On August 2nd, 2004 we will be moving all numbers that currently reach our 002-Philadelphia site and pointing them to our 149-Dover site. Customers will experience disconnects and fast busies when using these numbers during the scheduled maintenance. Maintenance is expected to last most of the business day.

This means most of our dial up numbers in the Philadelphia may be inaccessible during day. We apologize for the inconvenience.

It has come to our attention that there is a new virus/worm making the rounds called "Beagle.J". It is another strand of the "Beagle" worm that has been plaguing the internet for the past few weeks.

You may receives messages that look something like this:

From: staff@martnet.com
To: sales@martnet.com
Subject: Email account utilization warning.

Dear user of e-mail server "Martnet.com",

Some of our clients complained about the spam (negative e-mail content)
outgoing from your e-mail account. Probably, you have been infected by
a proxy-relay trojan server. In order to keep your computer safe,
follow the instructions.

Further details can be obtained from attached file.

The Management,
    The Martnet.com team http://www.martnet.com

As always, we recommend purchasing and installing anti-virus software, such as Norton Anti-Virus. Also, we recommend keeping the virus definitions in the software as up to date as possible. Most anti-virus packages have a built in feature that allows you to update the definitions automatically over the internet to keep you protected from any new virus outbreak.

UPDATE
The server has come back up, and we have made some changes to our spamassassin configuration to help cut down the load. The spam filters are fully functional, and we will be closely monitoring the server and adjusting spamassassin settings further if necessary.

Around 7:30PM we started to experience a system slowdown. Our theory is that this is due to an overloading of our spam filters related to the heavy volume of email coming from the spread MyDoom virus. We had to perform an emergency reboot of our server and are now waiting for it to restart.

All incoming mail is being qeued while the server is down and will be delivered when the server comes back up.

UPDATE 3:45PM - The server is back up and all qeued mail is being delivered now. We have believe we have isolated the problem that cause today's disk problems and partially some of the problems from a few weeks ago.

UPDATE 2:41PM We are experiencing filesysyem corruption in our hard disks. The repairs are lengthy and we do not have an ETA. All mail is being qeued in our backup mail server, so no mail is being lost. Also, in the case of major disk failure (which we do not anticipate) we have quadruple redundant backups of all files. We are trying to repair the main disk now, and we are sorry this is taking so long. We realize that this is a major inconvience and we will have the server up as soon as possible.

UPDATE 12:45PM The problems are taking longer than we had anticipated to repair. We have a current new eta of 30-40 minutes UPDATE

UPDATE: 11:10AM Our techs have isolated the problem and are repairing it now. The seems to be some corruption in the file system and the repair should take 20-40 minutes.

Several nasty new Windows computer bugs have been clogging corporate networks and personal email boxes in the past few weeks. Bugs such as W32.Mimail.A@mm, W32.Welchia.Worm, W32.Sobig.F, and the Blaster Worm are all over the news and all over your email box.

Your mailbox gets flooded with messages and it's hard to stop the flow because people that don't know that they are infected send out hundreds of messages, while others infected with worms are unknowingly probing and attacking computers all over the internet.

There's way too many bugs out there for anyone to keep up with manually but the best bet is to always run virus checking software on your computer. We recommenend software from companies such as Symantec, http://www.symantec.com/ . Make sure to set the software to update its virus definitions automatically, every day. New variations pop up every day and it's imperative to keep up to date.

Symantec also has a security based website that has many manual fixes for some of these virii.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/

Also, it is very important to keep up to date with security updates from Microsoft. Make sure that Windows Update is also set to check for security updates everyday to help protect you agains worms. Also, check http://www.microsoft.com/security/ for security updates and news on a regular basis.

And, of course keep checking http://noc.martnet.com/ for the most update news and server status UPDATE:We are now blocking email with the most common virus subject lines please see this page for more details:

THURSDAY AUGUST 07, 2003

It has come to our attention that there is a new virus/worm making the rounds called "MiMail". If you receive a message from "admin@martnet.com" that looks like this:

----------------------

Hello there,

I would like to inform you about important information regarding your
email address. This email address will be expiring. Please read
attachment for details.

Best regards,
Administrator

Attachment: Message.zip

----------------------

DO NOT OPEN THIS ATTACHMENT. DELETE THE EMAIL.

The MiMail worm sends copies of itself to addresses it finds on an infected machine, and forges the "from" address in the email look like it's coming from "admin@YOURDOMAIN.com". MartNet never sends emails from "admin@martnet.com" and never sends attachments. This worm only affects users running any version of the Windows operating system.

If you have opened the attachment, run your anti-virus software as soon as possible. If you do not have anti-virus software, a fix can be found here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.mimail.a@mm. removal.tool.html

If you haven't opened the attachment, you are probably not infected but we always recommend that you run some sort of anti-virus software on your computer, just in case.

For info about the worm check here:

Problem : Emergency Maintenance / Router Upgrades
Location: ALL

Our technicians are currently performing software upgrades to all routers across our Nationwide Dial-up network, to patch a new, rather nasty, Cisco/IOS vulnerability.

Each router upgrade takes from 5 to 10 minutes. There are a lot of routers to upgrade, so no ETA is available at this time.

You may experience problems only when the router that serves your access number is being upgraded. Problems may include Authentication failures, dropped connections, or the inability to access anything on the Internet after you dial in. Again, each router upgrade should take less than 10 minutes, so the inconvenience should be minimal.

If you do experience problems, and they do not correct themselves within 10 minutes or so, please let us know - our Customer Care Center can be reached at 1-888-530-3552

UPDATE - 8:00PM EDT

All core routers have been successfully upgraded. We will be upgrading all secondary routers over the next several days, and expect no problems or additional service inturruptions.

Problem : Emergency Maintenance / Router Upgrades
Location: PHILADELPHIA

The upgrades to the Philadelphia routers are not going as smoothly as the rest of the network. There are 2 routers in the Philly data center, so we are trying to keep service as stable as possible during the upgrades. However, please expect frequent dropped connections and network slowdowns while dialing into the Philly POP, and possible authentication problems.

All 215, 610, and 609 access numbers go to the Philly POP.

We expect to complete the upgrades and restore full service to the Philly POP by 6:30PM EDT. UPDATE - 7:00 PM EDT

The upgrades have been completed and full service has been restored.

On AUGUST 20, at 10PM EDT, we will be preforming a major hardware upgrade to our primary web hosting server, WWW1.MARTNET.COM. We have a maintence window of about 2 hours but expect the actual server downtime to be much less. We're doing this upgrade to prepare for future expansion and to give the server an extra power boost.

*** During actual server downtime, all mail will be queued in our mail server so no mail will be lost.

*** All of your files will remain intact and the same as they were before. As usual, we have extensive back up procedures and we will backing up all files before we do any upgrade.

*** If you have a dial up connection, it will remain the same. If you are dialed in during the upgrade, or dial up during the downtime, your connection to the internet will be unaffected.

On Tuesday, July 8th 2003, at approximately 7AM EDT, one of our primary Virtual Hosting servers, www1.martnet.com, was knocked off line. We are currently working to restore service as quickly as possible. Updates will be posted here as they become available.

We are calling in our telephone technical support team early today, but due to staff vacations and the previous holiday weekend we expect to be short staffed today. We thank you in advance for using this news site for updates rather than calling our Customer Care Center.

10AM EDT UPDATE
We are still working to restore the crashed server. At this time we have not isolated the problem, and no ETA is available. Our Customer Care Center is open but short staffed, so again, thank you for using this news site for updates rather than calling our Customer Care Center. If you DO call our Customer Care Center, you may experience busy signals or be forwarded to Voice Mail. Rest assured we are working on the problem, and updates will be posted here FIRST, as soon as they become available. We thank you for your patience as we fix this server problem.

11AM EDT UPDATE
We have isolated the problem (a crashed disk) and are rebuilding it now. We expect to have service restored in 1 to 2 hours.

12PM EDT UPDATE
We are still working to restore the crashed server. We expect to have service restored within the next half hour.

12:30PM EDT UPDATE
Service has been fully restored. Our backup mail servers have qued all messages during the outage, so no mail or other data was lost. All qued mail should be delivered within the next 1 hour, so please be patient if you're waiting for that urgent message - it will arrive shortly!

Also note that we were planning to upgrade www1.martnet.com to a faster, more redundant (and thus crash-proof) system. We have pushed up our upgrade schedule and will be replacing the server sometime in the next 2 weeks. We will be posting more information about the upgrade here, but when it does occur, we expect there to be less than one hour of service interruption, and we will be performing the upgrade at 2AM on a Sunday morning to minimize the service interruption's impact on your service.

KLEZ Virus Making the Rounds

A new strain of an old email virus is quickly flooding inboxes everywhere. The virus targets pop-mail client users (like Outlook and Netscape Messenger) and sends itself to everyone in your address book and elsewhere. However, when it sends itself, it takes email addresses from your harddrive as the 'From' address of the email. In other words, if your computer where infected with the virus, you could be sending it to all your friends, but they would appear from you Aunt Mildred.

As always, make sure your virus software is completely up-to-date in order to avoid becoming infected with this bug.

The filter is from SpamCop (www.spamcop.net) and appears to be functioning quite well - Over the last 3 days it has stopped over 50,000 spam messages directed at our customers, and in our (extensive) tests, no legitimate mail has been blocked (if ligitimate mail is blocked, the sender is met with a message explaining why and what to do about it....

We have upgraded SSH on ALL servers to support SSH Protocal Version 2 (as well as version 1). This is part of a scheduled system upgrade, completed on schedule, at the time noted above. If you use an SSH client that only supports the SSH1 protocal, you won't even notice the change. If your SSH client supports the SSH2 protocal (most Linux SSH clients DO!) you may be prompted to accept the new SSH2 RSA Host Key. It IS safe to do so! For the Security Conscious, here's the new RSA Key fingerprint is:

We will be upgrading ALL MartNet servers to OpenSSH version 2.9p2 between 10 and 11 PM EDT on Friday, October 19th 2001. Shell users may (or may not) be disconnected, and there is a small possibility that we will need to reboot one or more servers (at least 15 minutes warning will be given, and controlled reboot will bring the affected server off line for 3 or four minutes at most.) Most services should be unaffected by this upgrade. There is a small possibility that the host keys for one or more servers may change, and we are adding support for additional SSH protocals (RSA and DSA) so if your SSH client defaults to these protocals (and falls back to DES - our currently supported protocal) you may be prompted to accept the new (and legitimate) RSA or DSA host key.

NOTICE: If the words UNIX, LINUX, SSH, TELNET, or SHELL don't mean anything to you, this probably doesn't apply to you but you should probably read on anyway.

On or about MONDAY, OCTOBER 1st 2001 we are turning off all TELNET access to MartNet. This DOES NOT mean that we are turning off shell access or shell accounts. Telnet is a very common protocol that people use to connect to a unix shell. Unfortunately, telnet transmits data (including passwords) back and forth unencrypted so it is not an ideal way to connect to your account on a secure system. The only way to that you will be able to connect to your shell account now is through SSH (aka Secure Shell). We are doing this for safety reasons to insure that our servers are meeting a higher level of security. If you are unfamiliar with SSH or need an SSH program for your Windows or Macintosh computer, check out this link:

We are currently experiencing problems with the file systems on www1.martnet.com, which currently houses all Virtual Hosting accounts. Technicians are on-hand, and are currently working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

UPDATE 8:00 PM EDT
Previous attempts to stabilize the file system have failed. Note the system is operational. We will be relpacing the disk by 9PM EDT to prevent any possible data loss. The system will be unavailable for up to 30 minutes as we swap disks and test.

UPDATE 11:00 PM EDT
We have replaced one failed disk in the server. Everything is 100% operational. To the best of our knowledge, no files or mail were lost due to the bad disk (if you do find you are missing anything, please let us know and we can restore from Monday Night's backups.)
We are continuing to test and monitor the system just in case, but after one hour of heavy testing, everything appears to be functioning 100%

This Friday, the Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa dialups started experiencing a loss of routing. This means that numbers in these locations will be unresponsive. MegaPOP has determined this to be a hardware failure, and they have a replacement part for their core router enroute, which will arrive Monday morning. They will have an engineer on site to handle the replacement so we expect the earliest resolution.

Update: Engineers are continuing their efforts to restore this site. They are working on it now and will update us with information which will be posted here.

Update: Tampa dialups have been restored. Relief numbers have been created for the Jacksonville and Orlando POPs in the interim. The following numbers will work for these areas:

  • Jacksonville: (904)513-5599 (relief)
  • Orlando: (321)234-5599 (relief)
  • Tampa: All original numbers work.

Due to continued lack of response from service providers in this area, we have determined this to be a business issue that will not be resolved until Monday. Any new updates related to this issue will be posted as they are received. We are very sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Update: Issue remains an administrative issue for now. Upper management and providers are still working on a resolution and other contingent plans.

NOTICE ABOUT 2 NEW NASTY VIRI:

Code Red and Sircam are 2 new viri that have been getting a lot of media attention lately. And it looks like neither is going away any time soon. To get information on what these viri are and what they do, check your favorite Tech News site (ours is www.slashdot.org

These viri have been causing major problems on many ISP networks and many commercial web servers. If the Internet seems broke this week, it's probably Code Red or Sircam that broke it... If you can't get to your favorite Web Site or your HotMail account, we ask that you do not contact MartNet Technical Support about it - Contact the Site Administrator directly, or just wait a little while and see if the problem goes away.... it most likely will.

MartNet's servers are not directly affected by Code Red or Sircasm (they target Microsoft IIS and Exchange/Outlook specifically, which we do not use at all at MartNet.) However, these viri can eat up Internet backbone bandwidth and have caused major traffic problems on nearly every ISP's backbone (MartNet doesn't have a backbone per se; our servers sit in a backbone peering center in Philly, a point where many seperate Internet networks exchange traffic.) However, traffic must pass over other ISP's backbones to get from the MartNet modems to the MartNet servers. The timeouts you experience while checking mail could very easily be caused by congestion on the interconnecting networks. (we have a congestion monitoring tool for our customers at noc.martnet.com)

mail.martnet.com, our primary mail server, was mailbombed repeatedly for several hours Tuesday morning. Last night (5/23), at about 10:00PM, we performed a system upgrade on our main server for dial up customers, home.martnet.com. Sometime after the upgrade, around 4:00am, there was a catastrophic system failure which required us to restore the user files from backups. The last back up was done at around 5:00AM on 5/23 and the system failure was around 4:00AM on 5/24. After the 4:00AM all mail was qeued in our mail server so some of our customers may have lost a few pieces of email. We are still investigating the cause of the system failure, and will attempt the upgrade again when we isolate the problem and correct it.

All dial ups remained active and uninterrupted during this outage.

We apologize for any inconvience this may have caused.

To all Virtual Hosting customers:

As of approximately 8:00 this morning, users have reported an inability to send mail. The error generated will mention "recipient rejected by server" due to an error of type "relaying denied."

This normally occurs when anyone attempts to send mail while not dialed in to MartNet directly. It prevents outside sources from using our servers to covertly send mail (like spam).

This problem occurred several hours after our server upgrade was completed. We are currently looking into whether this was indirectly caused by the upgrade, or lies within the dialup network itself. Further updates will be posted.

FINAL UPDATE: All issues resolved. To wit:

  • Sendmail has returned from Zen mode. Mail should be functioning properly.
  • PINE, epic, ircII and *ahem* bitchx have all been restored.
  • Remote connections (ftp, ssh, etc.) have been restored.

PLEASE NOTE that we (still) do not recommend ANY non-secure connection (i.e. telnet) for your own safety. Please follow this link for a free SSH client to replace telnet (Mac and Windows users).

This should resolve all outstanding issues related to this weekend's upgrades.

If you have any problems or questions, please contact MartNet Customer Care. At this time, we are monitoring the server, but consider the upgrade finished and a spectacular success.

On MONDAY, MAY 21st at 12AM (overnight Sunday into Monday) will be doing
a major software upgrade on our primary web server, www1.martnet.com.
(you are getting this message because your web site is hosted on that
server) We have a maintence window of about 1 hour but we are only
expecting about 15 minutes of actual server downtime. We are doing this
upgrade to install some fantastic new software and to get rid of some
old, obsolete software to make our server an ever smoother running
system.

Here's how this affects you

*** We are adding a lot of new software and features to the
server, including JSP and Java Servlets, PHP4 (note PHP3 will
remain installed as the default PHP interpreter, so your PHP
code won't break!) All new features will be well documented
on our support site at http://support.martnet.com, so check
there after the upgrade if you are interested in using any of
the new features.

*** Disclaimer: We are doing an upgrade of Perl but most site
the use Perl should be unaffected. The only way you shoul see
any problems, is if you had poorly written code that used
absolute path names or something to that effect.

Basically, we have been doing extensive testing of all the major technologically heavy sites at MartNet to make sure that this upgrade goes as smoothly as possible, with minimal service inturruption.
